Keep On Moving
Walking is a great way to boost your overall health and wellbeing and is another activity which you can enjoy at Sole Touch.
Keep On Moving
What is it?
As a certified Walk Leader, Kathleen McWilliams leads walking groups throughout the Mid Ulster area, incorporating warm-up and breathing exercises into the sessions.
If you suffer from depression, are stressed, anxious or simply need to relax, then getting out into the great outdoors can do wonders for your mental wellbeing and physical health.
Walking with a group also brings with it the added benefit of social
interaction in a friendly and relaxed
environment, and encourages communication amongst peers and
other age groups.

Walking and Mental Health
There are multiple benefits to walking and doing this regularly, particularly in relation to mental health and wellbeing. Walking improves and preserves brain memory, and Health and Social Care studies show that a brisk walk is just as effective as antidepressants in mild to moderate cases of depression.
Indeed, walking releases feel-good endorphins, while also reducing stress and anxiety, so has many positive effects on our mental health. With Sole Touch and our Keep On Moving activity, we can also incorporate a life skills talk on topics of interest, such as mindfulness, into our walks, which will further help toboost concentration levels and memory.

Walking and Physical Health
In terms of general exercise, walking improves physical health in a range of ways. The simple act of getting outdoors exposes our bodies to essential vitamin D, which we need for good bone health and healthy immune systems. It also boosts circulation, increasing the oxygen supply to our cells, which makes us more alert and helps to enhance our mood.
Meanwhile, walking also helps to improve our posture and tones the abs and waist, all of which is beneficial to weight management.
